Service Learning in Action: From June 17 – July 3, students from Portland State University will be busy in Nicaragua. During their trip they will:

 

  • Construct a house made of plastic bottles with the help of a Nicaraguan volunteer architect and local volunteer youth groups.
  • Hold 4 health clinics in different locations, seeing between 400-500 elders
  • Work with 3-5 local organizations to develop youth inter-generational volunteer service for elders.
  • Host a workshop on chronic care management for 35-40 Nicaraguan doctors, nurses and other eldercare workers in the Boaco Province.
  • Conduct workshops in Managua and Boaco Province elders.
  • Host a forum in Managua to support the emerging Nicaraguan Gerontological Society.

 

1st Annual Community Scholarship Luncheon: On June 8th, 2010, we will be holding our first Community Scholarship Luncheon to benefit students from Concordia University (CU), Pacific University (PU) and Portland State University (PSU), who are participating in the Nicaragua Service Learning Program.

All of the proceeds from this luncheon go to support students. This is a unique collaborative event to showcase how transformative the impact of the work done by students from CU, PU and PSU is in Nicaragua. Concordia is hosting the first Community Scholarship Luncheon at:

University Service Learning. Our programs at Portland State University and Pacific University are going strong. JFR is happy to now include Concordia University, who took their first service learning trip down to Nicaragua in May 2010.

 

LEAP. JFR has a revamped LEAP in the works. A training will be scheduled soon for those assisted living and memory care buildings who utilize this great program everyday! We are excited unveil this great program. A special thanks to Jennie Smith for all of the hard work she put into making the new LEAP a cutting edge program, as well as Diane Bland for donating her graphic design expertise.

 

Gerontological Society of America (GSA): Keren Brown Wilson and Dr. Milton Lopez, with Board Member Martha Pelaez presented at a major symposia at the GSA Annual meeting in Atlanta, GA on November 21, 2009. JFR works in conjunction with Director, Margaret Neal, at the Institute on Aging at Portland State University on the initiative, Aging Matters, Locally and Globally

 

Dr. Milton Lopez Norori is visiting the US: Dr. Lopez's work with the elders of Nicaragua has changed many lives. His research in long-term care institutions and and the living conditions of the elders in rural and urban Nicaragua has helped to increase awareness both locally and globally. Dr. Lopez will be visiting the US for 3 weeks, beginning at the end of October. He will be speaking at Portland State University (November 9th) and at the GSA meeting in Atlanta, GA (November 21st).

New Shelter for Homeless Elders. May 15, 2009 was a red letter day for elders in Jinotepe, Nicaragua. A new wing was opened that provides shelter for 30 homeless elders. The money was raised by JFR with the help of many individuals across the United States.

 

Drive Change Campaign. Volunteers Steven Vick and Michael DeShane took to the road again in 2009 to help raise money for JFR's programs. Big Red traveled from New York to San Francisco on the historic Lincoln Highway. To learn more about Big Red, check out our Drive Change page.
